Hearing: Its Evolution and Ways of Compensating for its Loss

Abstract
Speculates that the sense of hearing evolved to help an organism localize its position in space and perform aural analyses of that space. Describes two major kinds of hearing loss—conductive and sensori-neural—and shows how hearing aids may help reduce the effects of such losses, at least for hearing speech. Hearing aids may, however, reduce a visually impaired person's ability to use sound cues for orientation.
