The Growth-time Relationships of the Auxin- induced Growth inAvenaColeoptile Sections

Abstract
1. The growth rate of Avena coleoptile sections in the presence of indoleacetic acid (IAA) is constant with time over a wide range of time intervals and IAA concentrations. 2. Constancy of growth rate is dependent upon the maintenance of constant conditions in which the concentration of IAA available to the section remains the chief factor limiting growth rate. 3. Control of the pH of the medium in which the sections are grown is essential to the maintenance of constant growth rate, particularly in the presence of high concentrations of IAA. 4. The lag period in establishment of steady growth rate by sections in the presence of IAA is less than 10 minutes and is not detectable by present methods of measurement.
