Abstract
Range distributions for low energy heavy particles stopped in gases have, with the application of a radiotracer technique, been measured at the ISOLDE on-line facility at CERN. After a short survey of the existing experimental and theoretical works in this field a description and analysis of the experimental method is given. Systematic results for Rb, Cs and Fr ions stopped in Ar and N2 gases in the reduced energy range 0.01 < ε < 0.5 are presented and compared with theory and other experimental results. Keywords
