Growth of Human Breast Neoplasms in Cell Culture2

Abstract
A method is described to obtain epithelioid and fibroblast-like cells from primary biopsy specimens of human breast carcinoma. The specimens were digested with collagenase and the cells grown in a complex medium containing medium 199 and a mixture of human and fetal calf sera. Of 32 biopsy specimens, there was growth of cells in 31; epithelioid and fibroblast-like components were noted in 21 of 31 and 29 of the 31 successfully cultivated specimens, respectively. In no instance has an epithelioid cell line been established. The fibroblast-like cells were readily subcultured and provided an excellent source of such cells for other purposes.
