Abstract
In this paper we introduce a small hydro plant that uses Archimedes screws. This is an alternate solution to small-scale hydropower as it exploits unused resources such as small rivers or streams. Based on previous studies, we explain how to obtain the optimal design of an Archimedes screw according to its nominal design flow rate, its inclination and its number of blades. Then, we develop a numerical quasi-static model to determine the mechanical efficiency of the Archimedes screw according to its geometrical parameters, its rotational speed and its degree of filling. Then, the Archimedes screw model is merged with a dynamic model of a permanent magnet synchronous generator in order to determine the electric power production supplied to the grid as a function of a specific site. Keywords
