Neurological Complications following Arterial Catheterisation by the Axillary Approach

Abstract

The authors review the neurological complications seen in their series of 21 arterial cathe-terizations by the axillary approach. Five patients had slight disturbances of the brachial plexus (paraesthesia and weakness) for some months. Two other patients with severe lesions of the brachial plexus are more fully described. The necessity of a very strict indication for this technique is pointed out. Meticulous care should be given to haemostasis and in cases of complications early neuro-surgical exploration is indicated.
