Abstract
Penicillin is an antibacterial agent produced by Penicillium notatum. The authors used a modified Czapek-Dox medium, adjusted to pH 3-4, saturated with (NH4)2SO4 and extracted with chloroform. A serial dilution method, using 15 to 18 hr. cultures of a Group A hemolytic streptococcus, was employed. Analysis of penicillin best fits the formula C14H19NO6. This prepn. is biologically inactive against Escherichia coli. The min. conc. active against 2 to 3 million hemolytic streptococci per cc. is at the dilution 1:32 million. This publication has 3 references indexed in Scilit:
