CARDIAC OUTPUT FOLLOWING ARTIFICIAL PNEUMOTHORAX IN MAN

Abstract
Measurements of the cardiac output and of certain other circulatory and respiratory functions have been made in three cases1 of pulmonary tuberculosis both before and during the establishment of artificial pneumothorax. All three patients were young men and had moderately advanced lesions of one lung, the right in patients F.S. and A.G.; the left in patient D.R. Summaries of the histories and clinical findings are given at the end of the article. Relatively large insufflations of air were given each time, the attempt being made to collapse the lung rapidly, in order to demonstrate as clearly as possible the effects of this procedure on the circulation. Nine hundred, 800 and 800 cc. were injected into patient D.R., with a four day interval between the first and second injections and three days between the second and third. Patient F.S. received 700, 500, 600 and 600 cc., the intervals between injections
