Endocrine Function in Thalassemia Major

Abstract

Seven patients with thalassemia major, ranging in age from 6½ to 23 yr, were studied. Growth retardation was present in all except the youngest patient. Thyroid and adrenal function was normal. Three patients, however, showed an unexplained increase in the serum protein bound iodine level. Pituitary reserve was not impaired as measured by the metyrapone test and by the response of growth hormone to insulin-induced hypoglycemia. Gonadotropins in the urine were detected in all patients of appropriate age. The urinary excretion of 17-ketosteroids was diminished. Post mortem findings in 2 patients were compatible with gonadal failure.
