Role of association cortex in auditory-visual conditional learning in the cat.

Abstract
Studied the effects of ablation of cortical association response areas of 14 cats on auditory-visual conditional learning. Ss were required to respond to a paired tone-light, but not respond to tone alone or light alone. Normal controls and somatic-sensory control lesion Ss learned the task in a comparable manner. Ss with prior ablation of all 4 cortical-association response areas were essentially unable to learn the task. Lesions limited to the posterior areas produced considerably less impairment.
