THE BIOSYNTHESIS OF CARBON-14-LABELED COMPOUNDS. I. THE CHROMATOGRAPHIC SEPARATION OF GLUCOSE AND FRUCTOSE

Abstract
General methods and apparatus used in the introduction of C14 into plants for biosynthetic purposes are described. The sugars were extracted from the plants with ethanol. After removal of the ethanol and proteins the sugar extract was passed through ion-exchange resins to remove interfering substances. The sugar sample was then inverted with acid and the glucose and fructose were separated by passing the solution through a column of Magnesol (a hydrated magnesium acid silicate). By this method chemically pure glucose and fructose can be prepd.
