Effect of Inductive and Capacitive Walls on the Diocotron Instability

Abstract
The influence of inductive and capacitive walls on the diocotron effect in a cylindrical charge layer of arbitrary thickness and infinite length is analyzed by means of a hydromagnetic model. The density in the layer is such that ωp2c2≪1 holds, where ωp is the plasma frequency and ωc the cyclotron frequency. A dispersion relation is derived which relates the oscillation frequency and wavenumber to the wall impedances and the geometric parameters of the system. Stability criteria are also derived.
