Abstract
An expression for the magnetic shielding of nuclei in solids and in molecules is developed, and an approximation is obtained that is particularly suited to substances containing heavy atoms. The temperature dependence of the magnetic shielding which arises when there are several low-lying states of the molecules is discussed. It is shown that only slight changes in the various formulas make them applicable to the diamagnetic susceptibility. Keywords
