Abstract
Using a simple model for an isotropic semiconductor, the kinetic part of the single-particle energy is evaluated. Nonanalytic contributions are handled explicitly and show that this energy decreases as the band gap opens. The expression obtained is evaluated for the cases of diamond and silicon. Keywords
