Measurement of blood pressure—a routine test in need of standardization

Abstract
Summary: Some of the different factors that can influence the measurement of blood pressure are discussed. It is essential that those engaged in the care of patients with high blood pressure should standardize the measurement of blood pressure so that the established routine is followed at each attendance. This is especially important today because so many people perform blood pressure checks. It is important to use the correct cuff and manometer. When considering costs, one should remember that the measurement of blood pressure is an inexpensive examination, but that poor equipment will prove costly both for the patient and for the community medical programme.
