Who Are the Oldest Americans?

Abstract
State-level planners in the field of aging need to know more about the part of their state population that is 85 and older, a rapidly increasing age group whose characteristics are little known. Because it is a costly group to serve, planning decisions have significant economic consequences. The oldest Americans are profiled on their demographic, socioeconomic, and relational characteristics. What emerges is perhaps not as negative as might be feared.
