Abstract
A small, versatile, digital computer (LINC) [Laboratory Instrument Computer] has been used to obtain physical examination information directly from examining physicians. Questions concerning physical findings are presented to physicians on a cathoderay screen and responses are made by keyboard entries. The presentation of questions is a function of physicians'' responses. Responses are stored on magnetic tape for future analysis and a summary of the findings is printed in phrase form for immediate use. In a pilot study, the physical findings of 50 patients from the Gynecology Service at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals were collected by the computer from residents and staff physicians. The reaction to the program by participating physicians was one of interest and approval.
