Abstract
IT is the purpose of this paper to review the changing clinical picture of lung abscess as seen in one institution. A unique opportunity to do this exists at the Massachusetts General Hospital, where a background of four studies concerning 681 cases is available, covering the period 1909 to 1942.1 2 3 4 The last two reports by Sweet3 , 4 included the years between 1933 and 1942, which marked, therapeutically, the ascendancy of thoracic surgery and the beginning of the present antibiotic era.
