DIETARY FACTORS IN THE PATHOGENESIS OF SIMPLE GOITER*†

Abstract
The occurrence of a naturally occurring goitro-gen of the thiocarbonamide series, l-5-vinyl-2-thiooxazolidone, in turnip and rutabaga root is reported. The possible relationship of this or similar compounds to the pathogenesis of certain cases of simple goiter is discussed. It seems probable that a high intake of certain of these goitrogenic vegetables by man may result in thyroid enlargement.
