The Pretransitional Kerr Effect in 4-n-Pentyl-4′-Cyanobiphyenyl

Abstract
New experimental results are presented for the Kerr constant of 4-n-penmtyl-4′-cyanobiphenyl in the isotroic phase close to the isotropic to nematic transition temperature, and a divergence from the Landau-de Gennes theory are calculated and can account for some discrepancies between experimental results obtained by different groups. However the behavior of the Kerr constant within IK of the transition remains unexplained.
