On Versus Slip in BCC Metals

Abstract
The problem of competition between {110} slip and {11̄0} or {1̄1̄2} slip in bcc metals has been analyzed using crystal plasticity theory. It is concluded that {11̄0} slip will occur in preference to {110} if the critical resolved shear stress ratio, τ{110}{11̄0} exceeds 1.732; and that {1̄1̄2} slip will be preferred to {110} If the ratio τ{110}{1̄1̄2} exceeds 2. These values are not extremely large as implied by the recent work of Takeuchi, who attempted, but failed, to enforce {110} slip by plane strain compression of a Fe-2%V crystal in the (110)[1̄10] orientation.
