Abstract
The effect of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2, 4-D) on salt accumulation was detd. by using 4-day-old wheat seedling roots. Forty-five root segments, for each exptl. flask, were placed in 5 ml. of 0.001 [image] KNO3 or 0.01 [image] KC1 with various additions of 2,4-D and aerated at 251 for 6 hrs. Nitrate analyses were made by Burstrom''s modification of the phenoldisulfonic acid method and the chloride analyses were made according to Fajan''s method. The 2,4-D was recrystallized twice from a commercial prepn. Results show inhibition of nitrate and chloride absorption by 2,4-D and the latter indicates the 2,4-D inhibition of accumulation is not a specific nitrate effect.
