PHOSPHORYLATION OF ADENOSINE BY KIDNEY HOMOGENATES

Abstract
Phosphorylation by rabbit kidney homogenate with adenosine as substrate proceeds either aerobically or anaerobically in the absence of added organic cofactors, with the disappearance of inorganic P and of pentose, and the appearance of reducing substances, apparently hexose, as observed by Dische and Waldvogel and Schlenk. The reaction is observed only when the nucleoside is in substrate, not catalytic, amts. In this process mononucleotides are not formed, and it seems reasonable therefore to question whether nucleotides in vivo are formed in the mammalian organism by the phosphorylation of nucleosides.
