Abstract
This is a response to a comment (Phys. Rev. Lett. 71, 2674 (1993)) on the authors’ previous work titled Elastic Instability in Alpha- Quartz under Pressure (Phys. Rev. Lett. 69, 2220 (1992)). The initiation mechanism for amorphous transition in alpha-quartz under pressure being a soft optic phonon in the Brillouin zone boundary as suggested by the comment does not contradict the authors’ early suggestion which is the transverse acoustic mode near the zone center.
