ANDROGEN RELEASE AND SYNTHESIS IN VITRO BY HUMAN ADULT ADRENAL GLANDS*

Abstract
Dehydroepiandrosterone, androstenedione, and 11[beta]-hydroxyandrostenedione were released by adrenal slices into the media after 3 hours incubation. The addition of ACTH increased 11[beta]-hydroxyandrostenedione release in all normal and pathological tissues but not usually the other androgens. Adrenal androgens are converted predominantly in "normal", hyperplastic, and adenomatous slices from 17a-hydroxypregnenolone-dehydroepiandrosterone-androstenedione 11[beta]-hydroxyandrostenedione rather than from progesterone-* androstenedione-* 11B-hydroxyandrostenedione.
