Excitation of Parity-Forbidden Transitions in H2 by Energetic Electrons

Abstract

The cross sections for energetic electron excitation of the parity‐forbidden $X^1{\Sigma }_g^{+}{\mathrm{\hspace{0.17em}\to \hspace{0.17em}E,\; F}}^1{\Sigma }_g^{+}$ transitions are calculated in the Born approximation. The intensities for these forbidden transitions are predicted to be comparable to the intensities of the allowed $X^1{\Sigma }_g^{+}{\mathrm{\hspace{0.17em}\to \hspace{0.17em}C}}^1{\Pi }_u$ and $X^1{\Sigma }_g^{+}{\mathrm{\hspace{0.17em}\to \hspace{0.17em}B}}^1{\Sigma }_u^{+}$ transitions for scattering angles as small as 0.75° for 34‐keV electrons.
