FURTHER STUDIES ON THE GENES IN OATS FOR RESISTANCE TO STEM RUST

Abstract
Diallele crosses of 9 oat varieties were used to identify genes conferring stem rust resistance. These showed that C. I. 4023 has genes B, E and F; C. L 3030 and C. I. 3037 have gene F; and R. L. 524.1 has gene F and a gene at the same locus as gene B. Gene A which confers resistance to race 7A but not to 6A was found to be closely linked with gene F which confers good resistance to race 6A but not to 7A in the adult stage. However, 1 line apparently combining both genes was obtained out of over 1400 lines tested. This type of resistance may soon be needed because no combination of the presently known genes except A and F will give adequate resistance to both races.
