Abstract
An extensive study of blood sugar estimations on patients of many types. Analysis done by the Myers-Bailey method, on oxalated blood, immediately after venopuncture. Arranged according to decades the fasting blood sugars (6475 estimations) were as follows: Decades: 1,91.8; 2,94; 3,96.4; 4, 98; 5,100.9; 6,101; 7, 102.7; 8, 107.4. The range of normal blood sugars is usually given as varying from 80-180 mg. per 100 cc. but the present analysis showed that in 2452 or 15.14% of these estimations the blood sugar was 80 or below; in 1791 or 7.85%, 75 or below; the lowest value was 30 mg. The estimations were done on fasting, 1/2, 1, 11/2, 2, 21/2, etc., up to 6 or more hrs. postprandial, and graphic charts and tables show this relationship. Blood sugars 30-35 mg. were found in 11 cases, 36-40 in 12, 41-45 in 23, 46-50 in 33, 51-55 in 55, 56-60 in 104, etc. The striking thing about the low sugar values was that these patients gave no signs of a hypoglycemic status and were apparently in perfect comfort physically.
