Auditive and Audio-Visual Perception of Pb-Words Masked with White Noise

Abstract
In a discrimination test PB-words were presented auditively and audio-visually to subjects with normal hearing. White noise was used for masking. The incorrect answers obtained at four different signal to noise ratios (S/N) were analyzed from a phonetic point of view. The results show in agreement with earlier findings (see e. g. Sumby & Pollack (1954)) that the visual signal of the speaker's face considerably improves the detection of certain speech segments. This improvement is particularly conspicuous in the detection of labio-dentals (f, v) and bilabials (p, b, m) but also in separating rounded vowels from unrounded. Moreover a pronounced correlation between frequency spectrum of the masker and the mistakes is found. I en diskriminationsprøve anvendtes såvel auditiv som audio-visuel prœsentation af PB-ordlister til forsøgspersoner med normal hørelse. Der blev benyttet hvid støj til maskering. Der er udført en fonetisk sammenligning mellem de prœsenterede ord og de fejlagtige svar som blev givet ved fire forskellige signal-støj forhold og to prœsentationsformer. Resultaterne viser i overensstemmelse med tidligere undersøgelser (se f. eks. Sumby & Pollack (1954)) at der opnås en vœsentlig forbedring i opfattelsen af visse sprogelementer når forsøgspersonen har mulighed for at se oplœserens ansigt. Denne forbedring er sœrlig tydelig når der er tale om labio-dentaler (f, v) eller bilabialer (p, b, m) men også når rundede vokaler skal skelnes fra urundede. Det fremgår endvidere at der er en tydelig sammenhœng mellem maskeringsstøjens frevensindhold og arten af de givne fejlsvar.Keywords
