Fast Ion—Molecule Reaction in CO2

Abstract

The production of O₂⁺ by a second‐order ion—molecule reaction in CO₂ has been studied in a conventional mass spectrometer. Experiments are described designed to determine whether the O₂⁺ arises from the reactions O⁺+CO₂→O₂⁺+CO or ${\mathrm{CO}}_2^{+}{(}^2{\Sigma }_g^{+}\mathrm{)+}{\mathrm{CO}}_2\to {\mathrm{O}}_2^{+}\text{+2}\mathrm{CO}$ .
