Breast-Feeding During Pediatric Residency: Is ‘Breast-Fed Is Best Fed’ Only for Others?

Abstract
Breast-feeding is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics as the optimal method of infant feeding in the first 4 to 6 months of life.1 Because more mothers are (re)entering the work force due to economic need or career demands, pediatricians have begun to acquire new counseling skills so as to be able to assist mothers who choose to nurse when returning to work.2 It has been our observation that there are increasing numbers of female house officers in our pediatric residency training program who become pregnant, work right through their pregnancies, and initiate nursing after delivery.
