THE REMOVAL OF LIPOPROTEIN LIPASE FROM THE BLOOD BY THE NORMAL AND DISEASED LIVER*†

Abstract
The lipoprotein lipase content of post-heparin plasma was compared in blood collected simultaneously from peripheral and hepatic veins. In humans and dogs, the normal liver removed significant amounts of lipoprotein lipase. In patients with Laennec''s cirrhosis and in dogs with acute hepatic necrosis, lipoprotein lipase removal was largely prevented. Differences in lipoprotein lipase of peripheral venous and arterial blood were consistent with the release of the enzyme into the blood by peripheral tissues.
