Ethanol Metabolism in Plant Tissues

Abstract
Utilization of ethanol-1-C14 by a variety of higher plant tissues was demonstrated. In all tissues examined, the ethanol soluble fractions contained a large percentage of the C14 derived from ethanol-1-C14. With the exception of corn coleoptiles only small amounts of radioactivity were present in the C02 evolved. The results are interpreted as being consistent with conversion of ethanol- 1-C14 to acetyl coenzyme A which is then metabolized by established pathways.
