Effect of Whole Body X-Irradiation on Serum Iron Concentration of Rats

Abstract
Serum Fe concns. were determined in male and female rats exposed to total body irradiation with X-rays in doses of 10-1500 r. The avg. values were significantly increased in both groups during the first day following irradiation with doses of 100 r or greater. Subsequently, the serum Fe concns. remained elevated for about a week in the 500- and 600-r groups. Male animals appeared to be more sensitive to irradiation as judged by the increased values for serum Fe.
