Ab-scission is brought about by dissolution of 1 or 2 rows of cells. The process is one of physiological changes within the cell content and walls and does not involve cell division nor splitting along the middle lamellae. The changes involve the disappearance of starch, and calcium, and cellulose becomes hydrocellulose. The microchemical technique is given.
