Abstract
Clinical, hemodynamic, renal, and metabolic effects of alpha-methyl DOPA were studied in 25 hypertensive patients. This agent was shown to be an effective antihypertensive drug that lowered blood pressure primarily by reducing peripheral resistance. Renal function was favorably affected. Mild Na retention and increase in intravascular volume were observed. Its favorable actions on cardiac output and renal blood flow suggest that it has special advantages for patients with advanced hypertension aggravated by cardiac or renal complications. Keywords
