Effects of environment on the relationship between mother and infant pigtailed monkeys (Macaca nemestrina).

Abstract

8 mother-infant pairs of monkeys were housed in bare cages located in soundproof rooms and 4 pairs in the laboratory in cages containing toys. Interactive behavior was observed during the 1st 15 wk. of the Ss' lives. Pairs in the privation environment spent more time in physical contact; Ss of these pairs oriented more behavior toward themselves and less toward the environment,) locomoted less, did less climbing, and showed less differentiation in manipulation of their mothers.
