Iron-Deficiency Anemia Resulting from Fetomaternal Transfusion

Abstract

THE purpose of this report is to call attention to one of the complications of the recently recognized syndrome known as fetomaternal transfusion. A number of reports^{1 2 3 4 5 6 7} have described a clinical condition in the newborn infant characterized by severe anemia and shock that develops as a result of antepartum passage of fetal erythrocytes into the maternal circulation. Although it has been recognized that immediate transfusion is life saving in these patients, attention has not been called to the possibility of the early appearance of a severe iron-deficiency anemia in the infant as a sequela to this condition.MethodsAlkali-resistant hemoglobin . . .
