A step drive which can be added to a monochromator without substantially disrupting a commercial instrument is described in detail. The drive is manually- but preferably computer-controlled and can automate monochromator operation. The drive was used to scan the monochromators of Perkin-Elmer model 12C and Model 421 infrared spectrometers.
