Antishielding of Nuclear Electric Hexadecapole Moments

Abstract

The antishielding factor ${\eta }_{\infty }$ for a possible nuclear electric hexadecapole moment has been calculated for the ${\mathrm{Cu}}^{+}$, ${\mathrm{Ag}}^{+}$ and ${\mathrm{Hg}}^{++}$ ions, using the Hartree-Fock wave functions for the $3d$, $4d$, and $5d$ electrons involved. It was found that ${\eta }_{\infty }\left({\mathrm{Cu}}^{+}\right)\cong -1200\mathrm{}$, ${\eta }_{\infty }\left({\mathrm{Ag}}^{+}\right)\cong -8050\mathrm{}$, and ${\eta }_{\infty }\left({\mathrm{Hg}}^{++}\right)\cong -63\mathrm{}000$. The implication of these results is discussed.
