Open reduction and internal fixation of avulsion fractures in the hand: The tension band wiring technique

Abstract
Tension band wiring represents an uncomplicated, predictable method of internal fixation of avulsion fractures in the hand. These fractures include the bony gamekeeper, mallet, and those associated with proximal interphalangeal joint trauma. The placement of a small gauge wire through the insertion of the ligament or tendon onto the fracture fragment avoids many of the pitfalls of internal fixation and also takes advantage of the wire's physiologic and biomechanical position. © Williams & Wilkins 1991.
