Proactive effect of a single ECS on step-through performance of naive and punished mice.

Abstract
A single ECS administered 1 hr. before the step-through trial to naive mice significantly decreased step-through latencies. A significant decrease of retest step-through latencies was observed when the ECS was administered to punished mice 1-8 hr. before retest. When a single ECS was given 12 or 16 hr. before retest, no significant effect was observed. Retest latencies were decreased significantly less by a single ECS given 1 hr. before retest (proactive disinhibitive effect) than by a single ECS administered 1 hr. after punishing shock (retroactive disrupting effect).
