THE JAW-JERK AND ITS AFFERENT PATH

Abstract
Electromyographic studies of the jaw-jerk in the decerebrate cat show the latent period to be 8.5[sigma]. The contraction time of the masseter muscle is 15 to 20[sigma]. Complete inhibition of the jaw-jerk is only obtained if the inhibitory stimulus precedes it by less than 16 to 18[sigma]. Partial inhibition is effective up to 115 to 120[sigma]. The afferent path for this reflex is through the Gasserian ganglion and the sensory root.
