Differentiation and Self-Development in the Relationship Context

Abstract

The author presents a way to conceptualize differentiation in which separateness and togetherness are identified as 2 different dimensions, both of which are important to the development of an integrated self This model allows diverse pathways to self-development, including both separateness, or distinguishing the selffrom another, and connection, knowing oneself in relational context. Application of this model through use of a detailed case example illustrates how both capacities may be addressed within one counseling session and how self-development may be facilitated within relationship counseling. Implications for assessment, case conceptualization, and clinical practice are addressed.
