Abstract
The administration of loosely bound HCL (betaine HC1) or butter and orange juice does not prevent the depressive effects of rice disease on body weight, respiration, body temp., and red cell counts. These effects parallel those of partial starvation. The administration of lactose, mineral oil or MgSO4 appeared to prevent the anemia without affecting the other depressive effects. This beneficial action is probably due to an alteration of the intestinal flora and diminished bacteremia.
