This paper reviews certain selectivity and polarity parameters based on the Martin equation and upon molecular interactions as described by test solutes, called functional probes. It is suggested that the probes be selected on the basis of their extended solubility parameters followed by statistical tests of their utility, e.g., factor analysis.
