COMPARATIVE PARENTERAL AND ORAL ASSAYS OF ADRENAL CORTICAL HORMONE SUBSTANCES

Abstract
Adrenal cortex extracts given by stomach tube adm. assayed the same as when given by parenteral adm. Corticosterone and dehydrocorticosterone are also as effective orally as parenterally. Desoxycorticosterone assayed 35 rat units per mg. parenterally by subcut. inj., but orally this substance assayed less than one rat unit per mg. Cortical hormone activity could not be demonstrated in the feces of rats which had received desoxycorticosterone acetate by mouth. This substance is destroyed in the gut.
