Abstract
Cameron G. C. and Evans A. W. (1973) The British conurbation centres, Reg. Studies 7, 47–55. The economic structures of six British conurbation centres are compared using data on employment from the 1966 Census, and the changes in their economic structures between 1961 and 1966 are compared using data on employment from the 1961 and 1966 Censuses. It is shown that not only were the structures remarkably similar with approximately 75 per cent of total employment being in the service industries in each centre but also the changes in the structures were very similar. There were considerable falls in employment in manufacturing industry and in wholesaling and transport balanced by slight net increases in employment in the other service industries. Keywords
