Preparation of Single Crystals of the Superconductor Ba2YCu3O6.5+x

Abstract
Single crystals for X-ray structural analyses were prepared and characterized by thermogravimetric (TG) and X-ray powder diffraction methods. Superconductive compounds obtained are tetragonal or orthorhombic in crystal system at room temperature. The value x in the chemical formula Ba2YCu3O6.5+x is in the range of 0.25 to -0.6 on the basis of TG curves of the stoichiometric compound measured in nitrogen or oxygen atmosphere. Oxygen contents of the compounds are mainly controlled by oxygen fugacity, permeability of oxygen into specimens, cooling rate and grain sizes of the crystals.
