Abstract
It is shown that within the tight-binding approach the modified overlap interaction, the covalent interaction and the polar energy allow an accurate prediction of the covalent bond length. The bond length of many carbon compounds in which s and p electrons form various types of sigma bonds and pi bonds are found to be in accordance with experiment. It is also found that the hydrogen-carbon bond length is well described with the given approximation. Keywords
